La data de 9 octombrie 1874 a fost înfiinţată Uniunea Generală a Poştelor, devenită, în 1878, Uniunea Poştală Universală. Din 1947 este instituţie specializată a ONU, cu sediul la Berna (România este membru fondator). Ziua Mondială a Poştei a fost declarată, oficial, ca zi de sărbătoare pentru poştaşi în anul 1969, în timpul Congresului UPU desfăşurat la Tokyo.   leviathan.ro
